Why We Built Career Helix: A Job Application Assistant Tool Built by Job Seekers, For Job Seekers
Have you ever gotten an email about a job application you submitted but you had no clue when you submitted it? That was me for a bit. This is one of many reasons why Career Helix was built.
A few years ago I had gotten an email from a company requesting to set up an interview and I could not for the life of me remember when I had submitted the job application…I didn’t even recognize the company name! A quick search of my email told me that I had submitted the job application many months prior…like before I had started working at the company I was employed with at the time. Even though I was open to a new role, the fact that this company took so long to get back to me turned me off and I didn’t respond.
By this time I had been working at a toxic company and I really wanted out. My good friend, who had referred me to said company, was working there as well and was also looking to leave. We were supporting each other in our respective job searches. Sharing info on companies via spreadsheets and chatting at least once a week about our interviews and thoughts on our experiences. It was a bit cumbersome using spreadsheets to save information and I kept thinking there must be a better way when it dawned on me…why don’t we store this information in an app? That’s when the idea for Career Helix was born.
Historically, I did not have an organizational strategy for keeping track of all the job applications I had submitted. At the time, I would have at most 5 job applications out there at a time and I was just winging it in terms of knowing at what point in the process I was in. This was a time when tech jobs were in abundance and finding a new role took a few months. That’s definitely not the case today.
There are a ton of reports and surveys out there and they all say the same thing. It takes 100’s of job application submissions to get a job. I can’t imagine what it is like to keep track of 10-20 job applications at the same time let alone 100’s.
I’ll admit, back then I didn’t do a lot of research on what tools were already out there for job application management. All I knew was that I wanted to create something that would help me and my friend get organized and hopefully help others in the process. With all the job market shifts that have happened since, I feel just as strong today that Career Helix can help you stay on track and reach your goals especially with all the features that are being built with you in mind.
Welcome to the Career Helix Blog. My hope for this blog is for it to be a place to share experiences, thoughts and answer questions that will help you get the job you deserve. I hope you find it beneficial. TTFN!
